This past weekend, Black Rock Farm welcomed a group of creative guests for one of our most hands-on and heartwarming events yet: the DIY Highland Cow Wood Planter Workshop!
From the moment our guests arrived, there was an undeniable buzz of excitement in the air. Set against the backdrop of our peaceful Maryland farm—and of course, with our friendly Highland cows looking on—each participant rolled up their sleeves, grabbed a paintbrush, and got to work bringing their very own Highland-inspired planter to life.
The planter pieces themselves were pre cut, giving everyone a perfect canvas to paint, personalize, and take home a piece of the farm. Some chose classic cow colors, while others added texture, lashes, and fun patterns that gave their planters so much personality. It was amazing to see everyone’s unique take on their wooden Highland friend!
A huge shoutout to my dad for cutting out all of the planter pieces, and to Jacob for helping with planter assembly during the workshop! A huge shoutout to all the guests who also tackled assembling their planters the rugged way, simply with hammers and nails!
We absolutely loved seeing families, couples, and friends laughing, helping each other, and bonding over shared creativity. For many, it was their first time doing a DIY farm project—and we think they nailed it (literally!).
As always, the cows were the real stars of the show. While the planter paint dried, guests had the chance to meet and take photos with our herd, making the experience even more memorable. There’s just something special about crafting a Highland cow planter and then meeting the real-life inspiration all at the same time!
Workshops like these are what Black Rock Farm is all about—connecting people with agriculture, sparking creativity, and creating moments that stick with you long after you leave the farm.
